Welcome
Welcome to ECT. I offer Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 tutoring in English Language and Literature for the English and Welsh curriculum.

I offer guidance for college and University applications, including personal statements.

Additionally, I offer revision support, including techniques and organising timetables.

I provide one-to-one tutoring on-line and, for GCSE students only, I offer small groups (no more than three) on-line tutoring sessions.

Our first session is identifying needs and any gaps in the student’s learning. This is done through copies of previous written work, discussion with the student and, if required, discussions with the student’s school teacher.

A lot of the skills for English Literature and English Language at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 are similar. Students need to be able to structure their writing; to embed quotations; to analyse quotations; to identify and analyse writers’ techniques; to be able to show understanding of the context a piece of writing was written in; and of course, to understand a piece of text.

After each tutoring session, the student is given the PowerPoint. Written work is closely marked and feedback discussed in terms of marks schemes, grade descriptors and, of course, next steps to improve.

I offer progress reports as and when required and you can choose to have this in written form or a phone call or Zoom call.

Education and Covid
Given the disruption to teaching last academic year and this one. It is obvious there is anxiety from both parents and students over both missed education and the arrangements for exams.

Educators know that students will not be able to cover all the content needed for a two-year course pre-Covid, whether that is GCSE or A level examinations. Therefore the government has advised that both teachers and students will be given advanced notice of the topic area in many of their examinations for 2021.

For example, the GCSE English Literature under AQA has been amended. All students will still be assessed on their Shakespeare play and unseen poetry. However, the other three other texts normally covered (poetry anthology, 19th Century novel and British fiction or drama post 1914) will be reduced to two. It will be the school that makes that decision.

2021 Examinations
England
England’s summer examinations are cancelled. They will be done by teacher assessment. Your teacher will give you a grade based on the work you have done over the last two years of your course, including your PPEs/mocks. Your teacher might need to provide the exam board with examples of your work.

Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland’s summer examinations are still going ahead. The Education Minister, Peter Weir, has advised a more generous grading system. He has advised that for GCSEs students are able to omit up to 40% of assessment in each qualification and for AS and A2 students will have the opportunity to omit up to 60% of their assessment. Northern Ireland AS and A2 examinations will be starting later than normal to provide additional teaching and learning time.

Wales
Wales has cancelled their GCSE and A level 2021 summer examinations. Education Minister, Kirsty Williams, has advised assessments will be taken under teacher supervision in the second half of the spring term and marked externally. Teachers will have flexibility on when to take the assessments, within the context of results timelines.

Deadlines for UCAS
